Visiting the dentist is something many people tend to postpone. Busy schedules, concerns about lengthy treatment processes, or dental anxiety can cause patients to delay routine check-ups and necessary dental care. Traditional treatments that require impressions, laboratory work, temporary restorations and several appointments can also make treatment planning more difficult.
Advances in digital dentistry have made it possible to complete certain treatments much faster. Same-day dentistry is a modern approach in which different stages, from intraoral scanning and digital design to the production of the final restoration, can be completed within the same day in suitable cases.
In particular, CAD/CAM technologies, digital intraoral scanners and in-clinic production systems can allow some restorative treatments that traditionally require several days of laboratory work to be completed in a single visit.
What Is Same-Day Dentistry?
Same-day dentistry is a digital treatment approach designed to complete suitable dental procedures in as few clinical visits as possible, sometimes within a single appointment.
With conventional methods, producing a ceramic restoration may involve taking an impression, sending it to a dental laboratory, waiting for the restoration to be manufactured and returning for another appointment. A temporary restoration may also be required during this period.
With digital dentistry, conventional impression materials can often be replaced by an intraoral scanner. A three-dimensional digital model of the teeth is created and transferred to computer software, where the restoration can be designed.
In suitable cases, the designed restoration can then be produced using an in-clinic CAD/CAM system. Scanning, design, production, try-in and final placement can therefore be combined into the same treatment day.
However, not every dental procedure or patient is suitable for same-day treatment. The decision depends on the condition of the tooth, the type of procedure, periodontal health, bite relationships and whether additional treatment is required.
How Does Digital Dentistry Shorten Treatment Time?
The main principle of same-day dentistry is not simply working faster. It involves transforming the conventional workflow into an integrated digital process.
Intraoral scanners can create a three-dimensional representation of the teeth and surrounding tissues. The shape and dimensions of the restoration, its relationship with adjacent teeth and its contact with opposing teeth can then be evaluated digitally.
The restoration may subsequently be milled from an appropriate ceramic block using computer-aided manufacturing technology. Its fit and bite are checked in the mouth, necessary adjustments are made, and the restoration is placed on the tooth.
This allows several stages that traditionally require separate appointments to be incorporated into one digital workflow.
Advantages of Same-Day Dental Treatment
One of the main benefits of same-day dentistry is time efficiency. It can be particularly convenient for patients with demanding work schedules who find it difficult to attend several appointments on different days.
Digital intraoral scanning can also eliminate the need for conventional impression materials in many cases. This may provide a more comfortable experience for patients with a sensitive gag reflex.
Another advantage is the ability to design restorations digitally. The tooth's shape, relationship with neighboring teeth and bite can all be evaluated on the computer before production.
In suitable cases, the need for a temporary restoration may also be reduced. Instead of wearing a temporary tooth while waiting for laboratory production, the patient may receive the definitive restoration on the same day.
Which Treatments Can Be Performed in a Single Visit?
Modern digital dentistry can be used for several types of restorative treatment.
Single-tooth crowns are among the most common applications. A ceramic crown can be digitally designed and produced for a damaged tooth or a tooth with significant structural loss.
Inlays and onlays can also be digitally manufactured when a conventional filling may not provide sufficient restoration but a full crown is not necessary.
Digital design and production technologies may also be used for porcelain veneers in suitable cases.
For teeth with extensive structural loss, including certain teeth that have undergone root canal treatment, post-core and crown restorations may also be considered.
Digital systems can additionally be incorporated into selected short-span bridges and certain implant-supported restorations.
However, the decision to complete treatment on the same day is not based solely on the type of restoration. Gum health, root condition, bone support, aesthetic expectations and the patient's bite must all be evaluated.
Is Same-Day Dentistry Suitable for Everyone?
No. The fact that digital technology can produce a restoration quickly does not mean that every dental treatment should be completed in a single day.
Active gum disease, advanced infection, extensive root canal treatment or procedures involving bone and soft tissue may require treatment before the final restoration can be completed.
Similarly, extensive aesthetic rehabilitation may require additional evaluation and try-in stages to assess tooth shape, bite and smile design.
The objective is therefore not to finish every treatment as quickly as possible. The aim is to reduce unnecessary appointments and waiting periods without compromising treatment quality.
Same-Day Dentistry for International Patients
One of the practical benefits of a digital workflow is that it can simplify treatment planning for patients with limited time.
For international patients visiting Istanbul for a limited period, lengthy laboratory waiting times can sometimes complicate treatment schedules.
In suitable cases, combining digital scanning, computer-aided design and in-clinic manufacturing can significantly shorten the production time for certain restorations.
However, medical and dental requirements should always take priority over travel schedules. Treatment should be planned according to the patient's oral health needs rather than solely according to the duration of their stay in Istanbul.
Same-Day Digital Dentistry in Üsküdar
Digital technologies are not simply tools for making dentistry faster. They form part of a comprehensive workflow that can make scanning, treatment planning, restoration design and production more controlled and efficient.
At Dentsmile Oral and Dental Health Clinic, same-day dentistry and digital dentistry in Üsküdar are planned according to the patient's existing dental condition, treatment requirements and the type of restoration needed.
Digital intraoral scanning and CAD/CAM technologies can be incorporated into treatment when clinically appropriate, with the aim of creating an efficient and comfortable treatment experience.
The central principle of same-day dentistry is not to fit every dental procedure into a single appointment. Instead, it is to use digital technology appropriately to reduce unnecessary waiting periods while providing the treatment required for the individual patient.
With this approach, the treatment time for certain crowns, inlays, onlays, porcelain veneers, short-span bridges and implant-supported restorations may be significantly reduced. Whether a treatment can be completed on the same day can only be determined after a clinical examination and an individualized treatment plan.
