Ceramic fillings are a type of porcelain filling used to repair material loss due to factors like decay, root canal treatment, or trauma, by only restoring the missing parts of the tooth.

Ceramic fillings adapt more quickly to adjacent teeth. They are also referred to as 'Ceramic Inlays and Onlays.' In this application, the healthy part of the tooth is preserved in its natural form.

What are Inlays and Onlays?

Inlays and Onlays are types of treatments that fall between fillings and crowns. They are used when the damage to the tooth is not extensive enough to require a crown but is too large to be treated with a standard filling. The Inlay fills the space between the cusps, at the center of the tooth's surface. The Onlay covers one or more cusps or the entire biting surface of the tooth.

Advantages of Ceramic Fillings

- They are aesthetically superior because they are made from high-quality porcelain that matches the natural color of teeth.
- They provide a better fit compared to traditional fillings, as they are made precisely for the tooth's dimensions.
- They are more durable and long-lasting, as ceramic is a strong material.
- They are less likely to cause tooth sensitivity because of their insulating properties.
- They are more hygienic as the smooth, non-porous surface of the ceramic does not attract plaque and bacteria.

Application of Ceramic Fillings

The process of applying a ceramic filling involves:

1. Preparing the tooth: Removing the decayed or damaged part of the tooth.
2. Taking an impression: A digital or physical impression of the tooth is taken to create the filling.
3. Creating the filling: The ceramic filling is made in a dental laboratory.
4. Fitting the filling: The dentist fits the ceramic filling onto the tooth and makes any necessary adjustments.

Post-Treatment Care

After getting a ceramic filling, it is important to maintain good oral hygiene. Brushing twice a day, flossing regularly, and regular dental check-ups are essential.

Ceramic fillings can last for many years with proper care. However, like natural teeth, they can be damaged by biting on hard objects or grinding teeth.
